Your first choice in the morning
You may have already guessed that I am a big proponent of small habit changes and using our ability to choose to move our lives in the direction we dream of.
One of those choices is one you can and should make every single morning.
Every morning we have the decision to make about how we approach the day. Are we going to feel sorry for ourselves, or will we take responsibility for our happiness? This tiny decision is how we tune our attitudes and our day into how we want it to go.
Choosing to change your attitude might seem like a small change, but in order to do so, we first need to realize that it is all up to us! We have the ability to see our upcoming day as joyful, exciting, and full of adventure, or we can also demand that it be a certain way, full of expectations that, when they aren’t met, distract and hurt us.
In the book Awakening From Grief, John Welshons tells a story about how easily he could choose how he saw one circumstance from the next, and I wanted to put it here to share with you the power in your choice.
I woke up early today, excited about all I get to do before the clock strikes midnight. I have responsibilities to fulfill today. My job is to choose what kind of day I am going to have. I can complain that the weather is rainy, or I can be thankful that the grass is being watered for
free.
Today I can either feel sad that I don’t have more money or be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and steer me away from waste. Today I can grumble about my health, or I can rejoice that I am alive. Today I can lament over all my parents didn’t give me when I was a child, or I can be grateful that they allowed me to be born.
Today I can cry because roses have thorns, or I can celebrate that thorns have roses. Today I can whine because I have a job, or I can shout for joy because I have a job to do! Today I can complain that I have to go to school, or I can eagerly open my mind and fill it with new tidbits of knowledge. Today I can murmur dejectedly because I have housework, or I can feel honored because God has provided shelter for my mind, body, and soul. Today stretches ahead of me waiting to be shaped, and here I am the sculptor who gets to do the shaping. What today will be like is up to me. I get to choose what kind of day I will have. So have a great day–unless you have other plans 🙂
It boils right down to you either believing you are the choice maker or not. When you see unhappiness and victimization in our society today, it is clear that most people do not see that they have the power to make this choice, but if we aren’t the ones making the choice, who is? If we don’t pick the kind of day we are going to have, who does?
Why would anyone choose to give the power of today to anyone or anything else?
We do have the power to make this choice and many other important ones in our lives. If you would like to learn how to reframe our choices into more positive and productive ones, I would love to guide you. Hit me up in the links below!
